MSc Dissertation Examination @ RG-QOE

The dissertation entitlied “Proposta de um Modelo de Excelência Organizacional para Pequenas e Médias Empresas” was supervised by Professor Paulo Sampaio. The examination was performed by Professor Maria João Rosa.

World Quality Day 2019

To celebrate the World Quality Day (WQD) 2019, the coordinator of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE), Paulo Sampaio, leaves a message : “In the 21st century we need to re-invent Quality to Lead and reach Excellence in the digital world”.

The WQD was established in 1990 by the United Nations and it is celebrated annually on the second Thursday in November.

It intends to celebrate quality worldwide, share quality achievements and to raise awareness of quality around the world as quality is a contribute for the improvement of performance every day of the year.

QOE @ EOQ Congress 2019

The Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE) was represented by André M. Carvalho, Catarina Cubo and Paulo Sampaio at the European Organization for Quality Congress 2019.

The 63rd edition of the congress took place in Lisbon, Portugal from October 23 to 24.

André M. Carvalho, MIT Portugal PhD Student and member of the RG-QOE, delivered a presentation entitled “Rediscovering Quality in unstable and complex business environments”.

Catarina Cubo, PhD Student and member of the RG-QOE, delivered a presentation entitled “2018 World State of Quality results: an overview”

Paulo Sampio, Coordinator of the RG-QOE, was involved in the Organizing Committee and he was chair of the parallel session “Process Improvement Projects”.

Furthermore, André M. Carvalho was awarded with the “Best PhD presentation”.

Narayanan Ramanathan at University of Minho

Narayanan Ramanathan, founder member and former President of the Indian Society for Quality (ISQ), visited the School of Engineering of the University of Minho on October 22, 2019. Ram is an Academician at the International Academy for Quality (IAQ), serving on the Board. He is also the Chair of the Think Tank on Quality in Planet Earth Concerns.

During his visit, Narayanan had the opportunity to deliver an open lecture entitled “Applying the Power of Quality-based Management in the Service of Planet Earth”.

RG-QOE @ 2019 MIT Portugal Annual Conference

Fábio Daniel Correia, Master student of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE), attended the 2019 MIT Portugal Annual Conference that took place on September 30, in Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal.

Fábio Daniel Correia participated in the poster session with a poster entitled “Quality Assessment and Improvement Framework for Organizations in the Context of Digital Transformation: First Insights” by Fábio Daniel Correia, André M. Carvalho and Paulo Sampaio.

RG-QOE organized the Summer School on Quality and Organizational Excellence 2019

The second edition of the Summer School on Quality and Organizational Excellence took place at the University of Minho between July 15 and July 20.

This edition was focused on Lean Six Sigma improvement projects. Lance Coleman and Liz Keim were theinvited speakers.

A Lean Six Sigma workshop promoted by ESTIEM with a simulation of a real life project was also carried out during the Summer School.

The participants had also the opportunity to visit the plant of Borgwarner Viana and IKEA Paços.

The Summer School ended with a visit to Symington Cockburn’s cellars.

This event was a great opportunity of learning, knowledge sharing, networking and team work!

QOE @ NFKR Congress 2019

Paulo Sampaio, Coordinator of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence, attended the Norsk Forening for Kvalitet og Risikostyring (NFKR) Congress 2019 that took place on June 6 and 7 in Oslo, Norway.

Paulo Sampaio was invited by Norwegian Association for Quality and Risk Management to deliver a speech entitled “The Future of the Quality Profession”.

Pedro Domingues @ Opole University of Technology, Poland

Pedro Domingues, PhD, Senior Researcher of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE), was visiting the Opole University of Technology, Poland, between June 3 and 7, through the International Credit Mobility UMOVE (ME) program.

Pedro Domingues had the opportunity to share some insights and to deliver some classes for the Production Engineering Master Students. He addressed a lecture entitled ‘Digital Quality and Quality 4.0: First results from a World Wide Web based revision of literature’. During his stay, Pedro also met Aneta Kucińska-Landwójtowicz, visiting Scholar at RG-QOE last 2018 April.

Dalilis Escobar Rivera got her PhD

Dalilis Escobar Rivera, from the Universitat de Girona and Visiting Student at the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE) – University of Minho during three months in 2018, got her PhD with a thesis entitled“Identifying factors for the customer delight in tourism industry. Model and measurement scale.”.

Presentations of PhD students in the 2019 DPISE workshop

The Doctoral Program in Industrial and Systems Engineering (DPISE) Workshop took place on May 15 and 16 in Guimarães, Campus of Azurém, University of Minho.

This annual event intends to share the work that is currently being developed by the PhD students of this doctoral program. May 15 students presented their individual projects and in May 16, a plenary talk titled “How to write a manuscript paper?” was presented by Prof. Luc Hens (Editor in Chief of Springer Journal “Environemnt, Development and Sustainability”).

The Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE) was represented by Catarina Cubo, Mónica Cabecinhas and Nicky Campbell-Allen as PhD students.

Catarina Cubo presented “An integrated vision of quality measurements”.

Mónica Cabecinhas presented ” Model for measuring the impact of management systems implementation in the scope of ISO standards”.

Nicky Campbell-Allen presented “‘Hitting the Ground Running’ - Preparing Engineering Graduates to be ‘Work Ready’ Leaders”.

Fernando González-Aleu at RG-QOE as Visiting Professor

Fernando González-Aleu visited the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE) between May 6-10. Fernando is Associate Professor at the Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM), Mexico, and develops his research in the continuous improvement field of expertise.

During the week, Fernando had the opportunity to deliver a lecture to the Industrial Engineering and Management Integrated Master students and an open lecture entitled “Assessing scientometric bias in a systematic literature review: a kaizen event in hospitals study”.

He attended the QOE monthy meeting and several possibilities of cooperation between UMinho and UDEM were discussed.

QOE @ Production and Operations Management Society Conference, Washington

André M. Carvalho, MIT Portugal student and member of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE), participated in the 30th Annual Conference of the Production and Operations Management Society in Washington, D.C. in May 2-6, 2019.

André delivered his presentation titled "Perspectives, challenges and opportunities for Operational Excellence in the Pharmaceutical Industry" in the "Operational Excellence in Pharma" session, where he shared insights of his work in understanding Excellence in highly technical industries, here in the particular setting of pharma and healthcare environments.

QOE @ SHO 2019, Guimarães

The Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE) was represented by Pedro Domingues and Mónica Cabecinhas at the International Symposium on Occupational Safety and Hygiene (SHO) 2019.

The event took place in Guimarães, Portugal on April 15 and 16.

Pedro Domingues was the chair of the session "Safety Management". Furthermore, Mónica Cabecinhas presented the book chapter entitled "Revisiting diffusion models: Portuguese integrated management systems evolution" by Mónica Cabecinhas, José Pedro Domingues, Paulo Sampaio, Pedro M. Arezes.

Additionally, Catarina Saraiva presented the poster “Bibliometric analysis on the topic of “integrated management systems”: A first glance” by Catarina Saraiva, Pedro Domingues, Paulo Sampaio and Pedro M. Arezes.

Paulo Sampaio @ Universidad de Monterrey, Mexico

Paulo Sampaio, coordinator of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE), was visiting UDEM – Universidad de Monterrey, in Mexico between April 8 and 12, through the International Credit Mobility UMOVE(ME) program.

Paulo Sampaio had the opportunity to attend the ‘Congreso XVIII Día de la Calidad’ promoted by ASQ Student Branch UDEM, where he delivered a keynote speech on the topic “Quality World in a Digital Context” (pictures below retrieved from https://www.asqlatam.org/lmc_cftc.html).

World State of Quality 2017 on the News

Paulo Sampaio, Coordinator of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence attended the 'Manchetes 3' last February 13.
He was invited to comment the daily news and also the World State of Quality project, which the 2017 edition was recently launched.

QOE @ "Quality 4.0 - Future of Quality" Management Conference, Tallinn

Paulo Sampaio, Coordinator of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence, was invited by the Estonian Association for Quality to deliver a keynote speech in the “Quality 4.0 – Future of Quality” Management Conference 2019, that took place last January 31 in Tallinn, Estonia. The speech topic had been “The Future of Quality is happening today”.

In February 1, Paulo Sampaio delivered a lecture at the Estonian Entrepreneurship University of Applied Sciences to the International Business Administration Program students and to the Quality Management Program ones, entitled “The Future of Quality and Quality Profession”.
