QOE @ IEEM2021

The Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE) was represented by Catarina Cubo and Mónica Cabecinhas at the IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering ane Engineering Management (IEEM) 2021 that took place virtually between December 13 and 16. Catarina Cubo and Mónica Cabecinhas participated in the “Quality Control and Management 2” session on last December 15.

Mónica Cabecinhas, PhD Student and member of the RG-QOE, presented the paper entitled “A Model to Assess the Impacts of ISO Management Systems Standards”, co-authored by Paulo Sampaio and Martí Casadesús.

Catarina Cubo, PhD Student and member of the RG-QOE, presented the paper entitled “Multiscale Quality: Micro, Meso and Macro Concepts”, co-authored by Paulo Sampaio and Pedro Saraiva.

QOE @ CAQ Symposium

Paulo Sampaio, Coordinator of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE) delivered a keynote speech entitled “The Role of Quality in Digital Transformation” at the 2021 China Association for Quality (CAQ) Annual Conference last December 02, that took place virtually.

The conference’s theme was “Embracing Digital Transformation, Promoting Quality Innovation, Pursuing Continuous Excellence”.

QOE @ 45.º Colóquio da Qualidade

The Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE) was represented by Catarina Cubo, Mónica Cabecinhas, Paulo Sampaio and Raíssa Heringer at the 45.º Colóquio da Qualidade.

The 45th edition of the event took place in Lisbon, Portugal last November 11, which was the World Quality Day, and it was dedicated to “Qualidade na era da transformação digital”.

Paulo Sampaio, Coordinator of the RG-QOE, was Chair of the Organizing Committee and he was the moderator of the round table session “O papel da Qualidade na transformação digital das organizações portuguesas”.

Catarina Cubo, Mónica Cabecinhas and Raíssa Heringer delivered presentations in the parallel session about MSc dissertations and PhD thesis projects.

Mónica Cabecinhas, PhD Student and member of the RG-QOE, delivered a presentation entitled “Modelo para analisar o impacto da implementação dos sistemas de gestão no âmbito das normas ISO 9001 e ISO 14001”.

Raíssa Heringer, MSc Student and member of the RG-QOE, delivered a presentation entitled “A Relação entre Qualidade e Inovação nas Empresas”.

Catarina Cubo, PhD Student and member of the RG-QOE, delivered a presentation entitled “A qualidade multidimensional e as medições da qualidade nas organizações”.

Furthermore, Catarina Cubo was awarded with the “Best PhD presentation”.

QOE @ FestQuali 2021

Cátia Pinto, PhD student and member of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE), delivered a speech entitled “Qualidade na indústria têxtil: certificações do produto” at the FestQuali last November 08, that took place virtually.

FestQuali is the main quality and innovation event in Brazil and took place during the World Quality Month (08-10 November), both in Salvador, Bahia and virtually. This year’s theme was “Sustainability: improving our products, people and planet”.

QOE @ Excellence Through Quality webinar

André M. Carvalho, Assistant Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave and Research Affiliate of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE), delivered a speech entitled “Resistir e prosperar em ambientes cada vez mais incertos e complexos” in the webinar “Excellence through Quality”, last November 02, that took place virtually.

This webinar was promoted by APCER and aimed to discuss quality and excellence topics and their influence to organizations’ performance and sustainability. The webinar is available on APCER YouTube channel.

André M. Carvalho distinguished as Rising Star 2021 by ASQ

 André M. Carvalho, Assistant Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave and Research Affiliate of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE), was selected as a Rising Start 2021 by ASQ among 40 quality professionals under 40 in the ASQ flagship publication – Quality Progress.

This was the third time ASQ had recognized a class of young and standout quality professionals from all corners of the world with a great relationship with quality.

QOE @ Jornadas de Engenharia e Gestão Industrial ‘21

Pedro Domingues, PhD, Senior Researcher of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE) delivered a workshop entitled “Quality up” at the Jornadas de Engenharia e Gestão industrial ’21, last October 19, that took place at Campus of Azurém, University of Minho.

This workshop was focused on the importance of quality management.

QOE @ XIII Congreso Internacional de Calidad y IV de Calidad Integrada

Paulo Sampaio, Coordinator of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE), attended the XIII Congreso Internacional de Calidad e IV de Calidad Integrada, last October, 16, that took place virtually.

This congress was organized by Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar, Ecuador, Fundación Observatorio PyME and ASQ Latinoamérica.

Paulo Sampaio delivered a keynote speech entitled “The Role of Quality in Digital Transformation: dimensions and developments”.

World Quality Day 2021

The World Quality Day is celebrated annually on the second Thursday in November and it was established in 1990 by the United Nations. It intends to celebrate quality worldwide, share quality achievements and to raise awareness of quality around the world as quality is a contribute for the improvement of performance every day of the year.

To celebrate the World Quality Day 2021, Paulo Sampaio, the coordinator of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE), leaves a message: “Happy Quality Day! Let’s make a better World through Quality!"

QOE paper published @ Resources

The paper “ISO 22000 Certification: Diffusion in Europe” has been published in the Resources, an international, peer-reviewed, journal of scientific studies related to resources, published monthly online by MDPI.

This paper is co-authored by Pedro Domingues, Mónica Cabecinhas, and Paulo Sampaio, members of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence.

QOE @ Erasmus + Smart-QUAL project

Paulo Sampaio, Coordinator of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE), attended an European Project meeting related to the Erasmus + Smart-QUAL project, last October 15, that took place at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, Barcelona.

This project intends to support higher education institutions to implement effective internal quality management systems using relevant quality indicators. The first results of the project were discussed in this meeting, namely the dahboard for higher education institutions management.

QOE @ XI Encontro de Investigadores da Qualidade

The Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE) was represented by Catarina Cubo at the XI Encontro de Investigadores da Qualidade.

This event was organized by RIQUAL - Rede de Investigadores da Qualidade and took place at the University of Aveiro last September 17.

Catarina Cubo, PhD Student and member of the RG-QOE, presented an oral communication entitled “Estudo de caso sobre a integração de medições da qualidade numa multinacional”.

MSc Dissertation Examination @ RG-QOE

Raíssa Heringer, member of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE) and student of the Master Program in Quality Engineering and Management (MEGQ) presented her Master Dissertation last September 06.

The dissertation entitled “Relationship between Quality and Innovation” was supervised by Professor Paulo Sampaio. The examination was performed by Professor André M. Carvalho (external examiner from Universidade Lusófona).

QOE @ International Quality Congress 2021

Paulo Sampaio, Coordinator of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE), attended the International Scientific & Business Quality Congress, last June 29 and 30, that took place virtually.

This congress focused on “Effective Education & Quality Management - Key Factor for Success” was organized by the Serbian Quality Management and Business Excellence Association – SRMEK and the European Organization for Quality – EOQ.

QOE @ podcasts

André M. Carvalho and Paulo Sampaio, members of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE) were recently interviewed in different UMinho based podcasts, both in Portuguese.

André M. Carvalho was interviewed by RUM – Rádio Universitária do Minho in its weekly podcast “Alumni pelo mundo”. This podcast intends to know more about former University of Minho students that are living or that have a larger experience out of Portugal.

Paulo Sampaio was interviewed by Alumni EGIUM – Industrial Engineering Management Alumni's Representative Body at the University of Minho (he is also one founder of this association) in its monthly podcast “Ninguém é quem queria ser”. This informal podcast intends to better understand former Industrial Engineering Management students path, their dreams, their path and their advices to future and current students showing the great extent of this academic course.

Presentations of QOE PhD students in the 2021 DPISE workshop

The Doctoral Program in Industrial and Systems Engineering (DPISE) Workshop took place on June 07 virtually.

This annual event intends to share the work that is currently being developed by the PhD students of this doctoral program. In this edition participants were also invited to submit a virtual poster.

The Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE) was represented by Anabela Silva, Catarina Cubo, Cátia Pinto, and Mónica Cabecinhas as PhD students.

Anabela Silva presented “Quality 4.0 predictive model for customer defects”.

Catarina Cubo presented “An integrated vision of quality measurements”.

Cátia Pinto presented “Framework for Integrated Management Systems 4.0”.

Mónica Cabecinhas presented ” Model to analyse the impact of management systems implementation in the scope of ISO standards”.

André M. Carvalho awarded with the 2020 Ricardo Dell’Anna Doctoral Dissertation Prize

André M. Carvalho, Assistant Professor at the Universidade Lusófona (Lisbon) and Research Affiliate of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE), has been awarded with the 2020 Ricardo Dell’Anna Doctoral Dissertation Prize.

This prize is promoted by the International Academy for Quality (IAQ) and recognizes the best Doctoral Thesis on Quality. André will have the opportunity to present his research at the IAQ conference this year.

The doctoral thesis of André, entitled “Operational Excellence, Culture and Agility: key concepts to manage Technical Industries", was supervised by Professor Paulo Sampaio (University of Minho, Portugal) and Professor Eric Rebentisch (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA).

Pedro Domingues @ Politecnico di Torino, Italy

Pedro Domingues, PhD, Senior Researcher of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE), was visiting the Politenico di Torino, Italy, between May 3 and 7, through the International Credit Mobility UMOVE (ME) program.

Pedro Domingues had the opportunity to share some insights of his research. He addressed a lecture entitled "Standardized Management Systems and Integration”. During his stay, Pedro also visited some laboratories related to collaborative robots and he met with some researchers that are used to collaborate with RG-QOE, such as Fiorenzo Franceschini.

MSc Dissertation Examination @ RG-QOE

Carolina Ferradaz, member of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE) and student of the Master Program in Quality Engineering and Management (MEGQ) presented her Master Dissertation last April 14.

The dissertation entitled “Model for Maturity Assessment of Integrated Management Systems: new version – IMS-MM © v2” was supervised by Professor Pedro Domingues and Professor Paulo Sampaio. The examination was performed by Professor Sérgio Dinis Sousa.

Paulo Sampaio @ EOQ-ASQ-ASQE Webinar

Paulo Sampaio, Coordinator of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence, delivered a keynote speech entitled “"Insights on Excellence” (IoE) Research Overview - Key findings of IoE” in an online EOQ-ASQ-ASQE webinar called “Navigating the Road To Quality in Today’s Technology-Driven Companies” promoted by the European Organization for Quality, last March 25.

Margarida Dias @ ASQ EMEA Spring Students Café

Margarida Dias, Master student and member of the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence (RG-QOE), delivered a presentation entitled “Quality 4.0: Thinking Outside the Box” at the the American Society for Quality (ASQ) Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region Student’s Café that took place virtually last March 11.

This event was mainly directed to students in order to provide them an opportunity to share with the community the work they are developing.

PhD Thesis Plan presentations by RG-QOE students

Anabela Silva and Cátia Pinto, RG-QOE Junior Researchers and PhD Students of the Doctoral Program on Industrial and Systems Engineering presented their Thesis Plan.

Anabela Silva PhD project is entitled “Quality 4.0 predictive model for customer defects” and is supervised by Professor Paulo Sampaio and Professor José Machado, both from the ALGORITMI Research Centre, University of Minho. The examination was performed by Professor Maria Henriqueta Nóvoa (external examiner from the University of Porto). Anabela presented her Thesis Plan virtually on February 10 and she was approved with a grade of 17 out of 20.

Cátia Pinto PhD project is entitled “Framework for Management Systems 4.0" and is supervised by Professor Paulo Sampaio and Professor Pedro Domingues, both from the ALGORITMI Research Centre, University of Minho. The examination was performed by Professor Otavio Oliveira (external examiner from Paulista State University, Brazil). Cátia presented her Thesis Plan virtually on February 8 and she was approved with a grade of 17 out of 20.

Jeferson Alves dos Santos at RG-QOE as a Visiting PhD Student

Jeferson Alves dos Santos was a Visiting PhD Student at the Research Group on Quality and Organizational Excellence, from February 2020 to 2021. Jeferson is PhD candidate in Environmental Sciences at the Federal University of Alfenas, Brazil. His research is focused on the development of an audit model for higher education institutions using sustainability indicators.

During this year, Jeferson had the opportunity to deliver some lectures, such as a lecture for the Industrial Engineering and Management Integrated Master students and a Risk Management webinar organized by the ASQ Student Branch UMinho.
